How to be a Good Host: Food Scrap Composting in Agro-Tourism

September 15, 2025 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Free

*NEW* In early 2025, the Lively Farm & NeighborFood Market joined SEEDS’ regional Food Scrap Drop-Off Community of Practice (CoP) to start a (soon to launch) community food scrap drop off on their farm. Lively staff will share about how composting compliments their neighborhood-based food hub and cultivates community connections. Learn about their growing compost operation, which began composting food scraps for their commercial kitchen in May. Hear about their CoP experience as they tour guests through their compost set-up, especially how it intersects with their agrotourism-based market and campground. SEEDS will let you know how you can be a part of next year’s Food Scrap Drop-Off CoP!

Grab and go food is available for purchase onsite.

The tour will be roughly an hour and immediately followed by a meeting of Leelanau CROWD (Composting, Recycling and Organic Waste Diversion), a nonpartisan group interested in driving increased composting in our community in support of healthy soil, water, air and people. All are welcome to join.

This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Food rescuers, animal feed operators, and composters across the state are hosting tours to highlight how surplus food, yard waste, and food scraps are rescued to feed hungry people or transformed into valuable animal feed or soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series.

Organizer Note: Most tours take place outdoors, so we advise participants to dress in weather-appropriate layers.
