Lessons in Community: Composting through the Everyday and in Times of Crisis

September 19 @ 9:00 am - 10:00 am
Free

See how Emmet County creates its homegrown compost at this site tour. Emmet collects over 600,000 pounds of food scraps per year through community drop offs and pick ups from local businesses, totaling over 3.3 million pounds since the program started in 2015. Hear about how Emmet County mobilized to support the community recovery from the April ice storm that damaged over 3 million trees in the region; you’ll walk away with lessons for community storm recovery. Stick around for an option to travel (self-drive) to Brutus, MI to see Mshko Ode Farm.

This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Food rescuers, animal feed operators, and composters across the state are hosting tours to highlight how surplus food, yard waste, and food scraps are rescued to feed hungry people or transformed into valuable animal feed or soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series.

Organizer Note: Most tours take place outdoors, so we advise participants to dress in weather-appropriate layers.
