Grand Traverse Band Gitigaan Fish Composting Operations

September 18 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Come learn about how fish waste is being used to build organic matter in our soils. The GTB Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department has been growing their fish composting operations since 2022 and is averaging 6,500 pounds of fish waste composted a week this summer. This organic waste is used to make high quality organic soil amendments to put back into the soil and food systems. The Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department is the vehicle by which The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians pursues the ambitious goal of establishing food sovereignty in the future.

Parking / Arrival instructions: After the roundabout, before arriving at the Strongheart Center, take the dirt road on the left hand side of the road north to the farm.

This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Composters across the state are hosting tours so that you can learn more about how your yard waste and food waste are transformed into valuable soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series.
