Hosted by The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa
Come learn about how fish waste is being used to build organic matter in our soils! The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Gitigaan Agriculture & Food Sovereignty Department has been growing their fish composting operations since 2022 and is averaging 5,000 pounds of fish waste composted a week this summer. This organic waste is used to make high quality organic soil amendments to put back into the soil and food systems.
This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Food rescuers, animal feed operators, and composters across the state are hosting tours so that you can learn more about how your surplus food, yard waste, and food waste are rescued to feed hungry people or transformed into valuable animal feed or soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series.
