Hosted by Great Lakes Incubator Farms (GLIF) and the Grand Traverse Conservation District (GTCD)
The Great Lakes Incubator Farm (GLIF) is an active land-based agricultural training program that fosters the growth and development of new and aspiring farmers. GLIF is committed to breaking down barriers for anyone interested in a career in agriculture and creating pathways for aspiring farmers from diverse backgrounds. Similar to the student learning that takes place, this tour will provide a glimpse into regenerative and organic growing practices, focusing on using bio-based soil amendments like food scraps transformed into compost. Participants will learn about newly installed onsite composter and the unique partnership GLIF has with Food Rescue of Northwest Michigan.
This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Food rescuers, animal feed operators, and composters across the state are hosting tours to highlight how surplus food, yard waste, and food scraps are rescued to feed hungry people or transformed into valuable animal feed or soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series. Most tours take place outdoors, so we advise participants to dress in weather-appropriate layers.
