Hosted by Zhaabwii Grounds
Zhaabwii Grounds is a unique space dedicated to reconnecting with nature, community, and culture. Inspired by Anishinaabe traditions and the values of sustainability and stewardship, Zhaabwii Grounds offers a place for people of all ages to gather, learn, and grow together. Join Zhaabwii Grounds creator, Kyle Anderson, as he shares his experience with the Food Scrap Drop-Off Community of Practice (an Organic Waste Diversion Advisory Partnership [OWDAP] Initiative) which led to a launch of the site’s new Johnson Su Bioreactor. The tour will also explore how this compost set-up will be used as both an educational tool and critical piece of infrastructure towards achieving Zhaabwii Grounds vision of connecting deeper with the land and each other.
This event is part of the Michigan Organics Council’s Great Michigan Compost Tour. Food rescuers, animal feed operators, and composters across the state are hosting tours to highlight how surplus food, yard waste, and food scraps are rescued to feed hungry people or transformed into valuable animal feed or soil amendments. The other tours in our Northern Michigan region are featured in this event series. Most tours take place outdoors, so we advise participants to dress in weather-appropriate layers.
